Making his first big solo appearance (by which I mean, without the cast of Lord of The Rings at his side) Orlando Bloom, aka Legolas stars as the son of one of the Caribbean's most notorious pirates. When the Black Pearl, a cursed pirate ship comes into port the town don't stand a chance. The pirates need to collect all the cursed treasure so that they can break their curse of being the living undead but they cant get a break from their ex-Captain who will do anything to get his ship back.
Orlando, of course, is in it for thr kidknapped girl whom he has always had a crush on but never said anything. She very obviously likes him too but is basically engaged to this rich yet boring Captain.
The film is very much like a modern "Indiana Jones" type tale, the type of thing that "The Mummy" tried to achieve a few years back. It has moments of comedy and even characters who are clearly comic relief. This along with some impressive special effects and lots of swashbuckling action makes Pirates of the Caribbean one to watch.
Why doesn't it deserve the full five smilies? I couldn't say, but there is something about it which falls short of the full marks. Perhaps it's just that it went on for a bit too long and seemed to repeat itself a little. Despite that though it is well worth seeing.
