The even longer awaited second instalment of JRR Tolkien’s the Lord of the Rings Trilogy has finally been released to a warm welcome. We have not one, but two reviews for the film, not that you would require any coercing into watching it. The first is by Duncan Steed, who beat Doive to it by about 4 days and the second by Doive.

Duncan’s Review:
“Yay! This was really cool. Obviously. I mean, why bother even reading the review? You knew it would be. At least, if you liked the first film, you'll like this one. It is of the same standard (I assume everyone agrees that that is high?) as the first was. If by some strange chance you hated the first film (heretic), this won't change your mind, but since you didn't, it won't need to. Plus this film doesn't have that scene in it where Galadriel turns giant and blue and talks in a voice that nobody can understand. The film has some amazing "wow" parts, and escpecially the battles, which make Star Wars: Episode II's battles look like a big pile of Ewok droppings. So go see it. There'll be Orc battling and dwarf tossing aplenty.

Doive’s Review:
Well, Duncan has already done a pretty good review of this film but don’t think that I don’t have things to add! It is a very good film and the battle sequences make those of most other films look like plastacine models having some kind of scuffle.

Gandalf the grey, who died in the first film is back and ready to kick butt as Gandalf the white. I won’t explain cos that could take enjoyment from the film. Frodo and Sam continue their journey to have the ring destroyed but Frodo is becoming seriously affected by the ring, the attack from Gollum comes as a surprise to them, however some of Gollum’s scenes were hysterically funny. The rest of the fellowship become engaged in battles with the advancing army of Orcs, as they try to wipe out man. It really does start to seem hopeless. Pippin and Merry who were kidnapped in the first make some powerful new friends and affect the war in ways they could only dream of.

Unlike the first film, the action does not seem as unreal. It flicks effortlessly between Frodo and the rest and leaves you wondering just what could happen next. It kicks off early with action and keeps running for almost the full length of the film. I did not need any toilet breaks thanks to a carefully planned drinking regime, i.e. not for several hours.

Though, almost as long, it was not drawn out and that is why I, along with Duncan have awarded it the full 5 smiles!
