I loathe titles which use the prefix "the", but that's largely due to the huge number of films that do so and turn out to be absolute drivel. However, this film was intreaging and coherent although not a bit like the trailers had me thinking. Those things do tend to be misleading.
This film is from the maker of '6th Sense' and 'Signs', both of which featured his now trademark 'I can't believe I didn't see that coming' moments. Though most people, including myself, when asked later will deny that we were misled by the plot. Usually the twist is obvious, something that although is obvious, we forget about because it ocurred so early on in the film.
There are creatures who live in the woods around the village and it's only a truce with them that means the two communities that means that they can happily coexist. When some people cross the line, strange events begin to take place and the odd looking creatures in the woods are quickly indicated.
The main character is a young blind girl who's upbeat and caring spirit makes her a delight to watch. Set in an old fashioned rural community, the daily activities felt alien to me, especially the delight in which they carried out the simplest of chores.
It's a film worth seeing, in the same way 'Signs' was, but it is not a gore fest or in fact a horror. Anyone expecting such will be disappointed. One to see the once I think, but probably not buy.
