Billy Conolly stars as a fisherman who loses his boat when it is struck by lightning. The Insurance company claim that it is an "act of God" and will therefore not pay out. So Billy Conolly goes after the one who is responsible, God. However how could he sue God? A local reporter joins his campaign and soon what is intitially deemed to be a joke is in the courtroom.
The lawyers fight for the insurance company who would lose everything. The church have to defend themselves by hiring lawyers too but it seems that they cannot possibly win.
Initially I thought that this film would be extremely biased againt Christianity but the church are not the villians, the insurance policy are the villians, with the lawyers being the devils who egg them on. But there is a surprise ending in the courtroom, which definitely made me chuckle.
