It's the 13th Century and King Richard is off fighting his crusades in the Holy Lands. Robin is fighting there also, but when the king is struck and presumably killed, the race is on to get the crown back to England.

The crew chosen to carry the crown are attacked and killed by a killer-for-hire who works for the French. By chance Robin prevents them taking the crown and makes a promise to the dying Robin of Locksley. He and his fellow soldiers travel back to England posing as the murdered crew.

Once back in England it becomes obvious that the King's war is being funded by a country that cannot afford it. To regain some of his former wealth the new King John rises the taxes, while his friend burns all those who refuse to pay.

Fearing an attack by the French, Robin leads an army alongside the new king to defend their homeland, but will the King keep his word to make all men kings of their own castles?

This is clearly the first of a series, since Robin doesn't even become an outlaw until the end. Typically in a time of equal rights, the Maid Marion is more of a Xena Warrior Princess character than the damsel in distress.

If you like action then this is probably one you'll enjoy. It's not as good as other similar Russell Crowe films like Gladiator. The plot is also a bit different from the normal Robin Hood storyline.

The other thing that strikes me about this film is that it's clearly trying to make the story completely secular. Even Friar Tuck doesn't come accross as being particularly Christian.

It's worth seeing but doesn't really feel like a proper Robin Hood style film. It's up to you whether you think thats a good or a bad thing.
