During the second world war, the Nazis decide to try and get some help from some demon Gods who were banished to the depths of space. The only thing that comes through the portal is a small demon boy, thought to be a red monkey by some of the more dim-witted american soldiers. He gets adopted by a catholic man whom decides to raise him a human.
In the present day, he is fully grown but despite being almost sixty years old still only looks like a twenty year old super demon. His adopted father, now working for a top secret organisation fighting the monsters of the night, allows him and a few other freaks (including Abe Sapien played by David Hyde Pierce but better known as Niles from Frasier a telepathic water dwelling creature and Liz (Selma Blair), an essentually normal looking human woman who spontaneously combusts) to help save the world.
It is a fun movie as long as you don't ask too many questions as you just wont find any complete answers. Any answers they do give seem to be skin deep but as an action film it's definitely interesting. If your looking for something deep look elsewhere.
The CG is good on the whole but still lack in places, and makes little or no sense in others. Baby Hellboy, looked oddly cute and Blue looked a tad wierd throughout but then he was supposed to be a freak. The best part had to be the scene where Hellboy gets advice from a nine year old boy about women. One to see if you want some good comic book style action whilst waiting for Spider-man 2 on DVD.
