I'm always a little weary of films that state clearly "from the makers of Scary Movie" because some of the Scary Movie franchise were absolutely abismal, yet others were actually quite good but the complete quote included the redeeming phrase "... and The Naked Gun".
A boy tells us the story of his life and how he's in love with a girl whom he's always lived nextdoor to. Following a trip to a laboratory run by Star Trek actor Brent Spiner (or Data) where he is bitten by a super enhanced dragonfly.
The following day he notices a few unusual abilities including quick reflexes, an inability to be injured by stabbing and the ability to climb and in fact breakdance on walls. He decides to use his new found super-powers to protect the victims of crime but ends up causing almost as much damage.
When a sinister villain plots to kill a thousand or so people to achieve immortality it is down to the Dragonfly to save them.
This is definitely a laugh out loud comedy and we found ourselves quoting it all the way home. Unlike a lot of other spoofs of the 'Insert Genre Movie' this film focussed far more on slapstick and parody than on over the top sexual innuendo. That's not to say that it was free of it completely and the use of the S word was quite regular and repeated.
That aside though, the film had me and Ceri in hysterics at times. Leslie Nielsen (Spy Hard, The Naked Gun) is one of those actors that was made for spoofs - so as soon as I saw him in the trailor I knew it was one I wanted to see.
The main plot mimics Spider-man quite closely vearing off at times to take the mick out of Batman Begins, X-men and Fantastic Four to name a few. Although it spoofs these films, pointing out quite blatant and common plot devices and camera tricks, it is not in a malicious way.
This is one I'll probably end up owning, because it has my sense of humour written all over it.
