This has been probably been the most highly anticipated blockbuster of the summer. The Dark Knight is the sequel to the now cult favorite Batman Begins which gave Batman a new lease of life and his credibility back.
This film is also highly regarded because it is the last completed film starring the late Heath Ledger (A Knight's Tale) and Ledger didn't disappoint.
The caped crusader is still on the loose, cleaning up the city with the help of Gordon, though officially he is a wanted man - the police aren't exactly hunting him. A madman - going by the name "Joker" - is on the loose, stirring up both the criminals and the police alike. Harvey Dent, the head lawyer in Gotham, is keen to clean up the city and understands how someone like Batman is needed at times like this.
When the Joker, approaches the mob bosses and proposes to kill the Batman, they reluctantly agree. Soon enough, the Joker is holding the city to ransom unless the Bat turns himself in but his plot runs far deeper than anyone realises - forcing everyone to make choices they might regret.
This is such a complicated film, that it is difficult to do the plot justice in such a short article. If I have made the film sound cheesy then this couldn't be further from the truth. If there was anything wrong with this film it was the affects on 'two face' which were, to be frank, better suited to a B movie. The film was also probably a bit long. It could easily have been spread into a third film - which is what I had expected with the late introduction of 2 face.
Having said that, the film had you on the edge of your seat and wasn't very predictable. The Joker stole the show with his manic behaviour which was a million miles from the Heath Ledger I have ever seen in a film previously. Indeed, I would call his performance - creepy.
And like in Batman Begins, the storyline was believable (within a comic book setting, of course) unlike the old school batman flicks.
Not that you'd need any encouragement to do so - Go see this film, if you haven't already. It is easily the best film I've seen this year so far.
