Some time ago, in a town called Wall (so named because of the Wall just outside the village over which nobody is permitted to cross), a young man lives. Being of the adventurous sort he easily gets past the guard and enters a kingdom where all kinds of magical things can happen.
He meets a girl, who happens to being held captive by a witch and ... well ... 9 months later a baby is delivered to his house by the wall's guard.
18 years later, Tristan (the baby), wanting to prove his love to an absolutely lovely (not) young lady promises her that he will go and find a fallen star that fell the other side of the wall. After his father gives him a candle and they light it, he suddenly appears there and instead of finding a lump of rock he finds a young woman who is a bit dazed and has a broken ankle.
From there on in it gets a little bit complicated and I can't honestly be bothered to retell the whole story. What I will say though is that there are witches, princes that would be king, a cross-dressing lightning pirate and some wise-cracking ghost princes.
It was ridiculously far fetched, cheesy and I loved every minute of it! I love any film that can get the mix right so there is magic, love, action and comedy all in the right measure - topped with an extra helping of "out there" storyline and yet still come out as good.
One of the fight scenes reminded me of Star Wars when she (the witch - played by Michelle Pfeiffer) was using magic to throw things at our hero. As did it when you consider that there are blue ghosts. At other times it was more reminiscent of Pirates of the Carribbean and still other times it had a Lord of the Rings kind of flavour.
Aside from the captain's cross dressing dance confrontation (Robert De Niro in drag!) - I think my favourite bit was when the poor bloke Bernard, after having being turned into a goat - was suddenly turned into a woman. His reaction was classic - straight to the chest!
This was a funny, querky if not somewhat random film but one I'd happily see again and would consider for purchase. Go see this!
