Fantastic Four was absolutely slated by the critic s a few years ago, but despite that obviously had enough of a following from us, the dumb public, that they commissioned a second film.
The Rise of the Silver Surfer, takes place a couple of years after the end of the first film. Mr Fantastic and the Invisible woman have been dating for some time and the wedding keeps on getting delayed. The human torch has been trying to get sponsorship deals and the rock guy (sorry, my memory really sucks) is getting used to being made of rock and his blind girlfriend really doesn't mind.
Unfortunately Mr Fantastic just can't switch off from trying to save the world, even around the prep for his wedding. Granted the arrival of The Silver Surfer was a tad inconvenient and the 'until death do us part' would be a bit sooner if they don't do something but it's her big day and nothing can get in the way.
The silver surfer who is causing anomalies across the world looks cool and the return of Dr Doom from the first movie came as a surprise to me, but he wasn't justed tacked on and played an important part.
If there was anything I didn't like it was probably the overly simplified destruction of the plannet gobbling Galactus, but I must admit that this was an after thought and I was quite happy when I left the cinema at the time.
I love the returning wittiness and the funny character querks of the fantastic four as they quibble with each other. The power swapping is hysterically funny at times especially when Sue storm spontaneously birsts into flames and Johnny Blaze made of rock.
It's a good simple comic book film. Not too pretentious and not over the top and because the first set up the characters well, it gets right into the action with minimal build up.
See this.
