Years ago, Mel Brooks wrote a movie about the world's worst stage musical idea. A musical so bad that it would be immediately panned by the critics because he and his accountant had worked out that they could make more money with a flop than with a success!
The movie became a musical and this is the movie of the musical. What surprised me was the fact that this film is actually a musical, complete with over the top musical numbers.
"Unhappy"
Some of the songs hit the right note, mixing comedy with song quite expertly. Other songs and scenes were too long and not funny enough. The plot itself was relatively weak and were it not for the songs the film'd have been over in a fraction of the time.
I haven't yet seen the original, nor the stage musical but I hope their better than this. It's not terrible by any means, but it could have been a lot better.
