King Kong is another of those classic movies that Director's just couldn't resist remaking. In the originals the special effects were not up to scratch and Lord of the Rings Director, Peter Jackson, decided to take on the task.
Jack Black plays an unscrupulous film maker keen to make his name known in the movie world at any cost. The problem being that he has no money and his latest film pitches have been turned down.
He escapes with his actors and crew just in time to avoid the police as they head to an island he knows of only due to a map he had found. When they arrive, the natives attack them for trespassing and offer the leading lady as a sacrifice to the king of the island, a giant ape named Kong.
The rest of the movie follows their attempts to rescue Anne from the beast and avoid being killed themselves in the process. The island is inhabited by all kinds of prehistoric creatures including giant slow worms and dinosaurs.
There are some tremendous fight scenes in this, though the strange relationship between Anne and Kong is oddly captivating. Andy Sercus (Gollum) was used for the ape manorisms which give Kong that extra realistic edge.
Sometimes over the top and at the start needlessly slow in terms of storyline, this film was brilliant. What it lacks in pace it makes up for in action and special effects. A great movie.
