Buffy director, Joss Whedon, is no stranger to having his ideas shelved within a short amount of time. When he made the original Buffy the Vampire Slayer movie which was a massive disappointment, he was given a second chance in the medium of television. The same is true, but reversed here.
Firefly was a short lived tv series, which I've heard good things about but never saw. It was cancelled after a few seasons because it was too slow paced and wasn't drawing the crowds. So, the concept has been transferred to the big screen and it seems to work.
The film begins bby giving us a brief history of our future. We used up all our resources on Earth and so colonised a system of planets some way off. All did not go well and wars broke out but the alliance won.
We are taken into a classroom where a small child is questioning her teacher, suddenly we realise that this classroom was an illusion by the people who are trying to brainwash the now teenaged woman. It gets a little confusing with a few more reality puzzlers but it does get easier to follow.
The girl knows things (because she is telepathic) and somehow has some truly amazing kick-butt moves, all of which comes as a surprise to her crew and in particular the captain (Johnny from 2 guys and a girl) who wants rid of her.
But curiousity gets the better of him and he keeps her aboard, only to find that his friends, exgirlfriend and crew are now all in danger from a man who seeks a sinless world, and will use any means possible to achieve it.
You can tell this is a Joss Whedon film, it contains very buffyesque characters, puns and action sequences. However I must concur with my housemate that the acting is of high quality. There have to be sequels to this film...
